Characteristics of an echovirus type 30 strain isolated during an epidemic of aseptic meningitis in New York in 1968. Amer J Epidem 93: 281290, 1971.Twenty out of 26 virus strains isolated in 1968 in New York from patients hospitalized with aseptic meningitis proved to be echovirus type 30. The 1968 echovirus 30 appeared to possess weak immunogenie and antigenic properties. The sera from patients infected with this virus had rather low titers of antibody; these were, at times, higher against the Bastianni strain of echovirus 30 than against the echovirus 30 strains isolated from the patient. The newly isolated strains all showed an rct/40 positive marker. Serial cell culture passages of the isolated strains revealed the existence of plaque mutants. A serologic comparison of the Bastianni and 1968 strains showed that they share common antigens, but some antigenic components present in Bastianni were lacking in the 1968 epidemic strain.
