Rapid Communications
The EditorsWith this issue of the Journal, we introduce a new section entitled, "Rapid Communications." The new section aims at encouraging the submission of preliminary, yet exciting findings, whenever appropriate. In their cover letters, authors will request consideration of these short (2,000 or fewer words) papers under this new category. Reviews of these papers will focus not only on quality but also on whether early publication is justified. The Journal has a cadre of Associate Editors who have agreed to provide us with quick reviews; they will be asked to assess these papers expeditiously. If accepted, a "rapid communication" will be placed on a fast track for publication. Authors will be notified quickly if their submission is not suitable as a "rapid communication" andprovided that the paper receives a sufficiently high priority rating upon initial editorial screeningwill be asked whether they agree to have their paper reclassified as a "brief report."
The past year saw an increasing number of submissions: more than 1,400 compared with less than 900 a mere 3 years ago. This trend, likely due in part to the expansion of our discipline and the prestige of our journal, also seems to result from the ease of electronic submissions. An important advantage of publication of short articles is to allow a larger number of papers per issue. In addition, as pointed out in a recent editorial (Am J Epidemiol 2005;161:405), submission and publication of short articles has the potential of making the Journal more reader-friendly as well as easing the burden on reviewers and editors. We look forward to receiving many submissions of 2,000 or fewer words.
