THE TITRATION OF RHINOVIRUSES AND OF ANTIBODIES AGAINST THEM BY MEANS OF THE PHOTOMETRIC HEMAGGREGATION-INHIBITION TEST
Institute of Microbiology, Medizinische Hochschule Hannover, Hannover-Kleefeld Bissendorferstrasse 9, Germany
The novel technique for the titration of rhinoviruses and of antibodies against them described in this paper is based on the finding that rhinovirus suspensions inhibit the aggregation of trypsin-treated human erythrocytes, suspended in an albumin containing glucose solution of low ionic strength at low pH, and that the hemag-gregation inhibiting activity of the virus suspensions is specifically bound by the addition of homologous antibody. This paper gives a detailed description of the conduct of tests. Furthermore, the results of testing rhinovirus suspensions and antisera comparatively both by hemaggregation inhibition test and by conventional techniques are presented.
